Which neighborhoods in Palermo are the best home base in terms of safety and character which are within walking distance to the major sites? I am considering a B&B directly in from of the Massimo Theatre but haven’t made any reservations yet.

Anywhere between the train station and the Politeama theater would work. Avoid south of the train station.

I have stayed near the Politeama Theatre several times. It is a large, central square within walking distance of many shops and sites. The bus to the airport also stops right in front of the the Politeama.

I just stayed near the Massimo Theater. The neighborhood was fine with lots of restaurants.
