Best/most economical way to travel between Italy & Sicily

I need to go from Florence to Palermo, Sicily on Oct. 21 and from Catania to Rome on Nov. 1. I have heard of using www.skyscanner.com to find flights (although not sure I could take my carry-on luggage & would prefer not to have to check it), or is rail travel an option & is there a strategy for booking/buying the rail passes?

A rail pass won't help if that's all the travel you're doing. You can check schedules on the Deutsche Bahn website, but for fares you'll need to go to TrenItalia. You won't be able to see October/November schedules and fares yet; info is available for trips through June 10. Check for your itinerary on the correct week day in early June.

You will save money if you buy tickets shortly after they go on sale, but the cheapest tickets will be non-refundable/nonchangeable.

Those are extremely long train rides; I would fly. My experience on the night train from Rome to Catania in 2015 was miserable.

Vueling, Volotea, EasyJet and Alitalia fly between Sicilia and the mainland. I found tickets from Catania to Napoli for $29. One checked bag was a few dollars more.
Alitalia's prices may be a bit higher than the others, but they have a more generous baggage allowance.

I have the same dilemma. I am going from Catania to Sorrento at the end of May. I was going to take the train from Catania to Salerno and then the bus to Sicily. Any thoughts or different ideas?

There was another reply to my question that definitely said to avoid the train.....too long & miserable. Flying seemed to be the best choice. Try skyscanner.com

Both of these flights are very short and cheap. Why waste a day of vacation on the train.
Train is most likely more expensive.

Hello Betty, we may be on the same RS Sicily Tour ... Oct 22- Nov 1. Try looking at Kayak.com ... they show Ryan Air non-stops from Florence to Palermo for ~ $85 ... don't know if Ryan Air suits you. We plan to fly from Chicago to Milan, arriving on the 13th. We have an Airbnb apartment and will fly to Palermo on the 19th, touring a bit before the tour begins. Anyway, check Kayak.
