planning my first trip to Rome with my husband. Dont know what is the best month. We were thinking this october or April 2011. need help

From a weather perspective, both months' are great! From a crowd perspective, you have a choice: North American school holiday groups in April or the German fall break in October. Personally, have done both months' in the past, and I would schedule around the German break as the North American break seems to be staggered throughout April.
I think one of the regular posters' is in the DL, and he can probably fix the October date in 2010 better than I.

One advantage to April over October is that in April the flowers will be blooming and everything will be green. In October, not so much.

April/May and September/October are probably my two favorite times to go over.
Good point about flowers being in bloom in the springtime.
Very tough call -- but we were very happy with October 20th(ish) to November 10th(ish) throughout Italy several years ago. Evenings were cool, we had very little rain, and afternoons warm.
