Best method to get to Central Milan from Malpensa (MXP)

We will be visiting Milan this fall for a few days before traveling to Florence. What options do we have to get from the airport to the central part of Milan (near the Duomo)? Thanks!

Take the Malpensa Express train from the airport train station to Milano Cadorna station which is a short walk from the Duomo. The trains go to 2 different Milan stations, the other is Milano Centrale. They are different trains, so make sure you get on the right one (they alternate departures), although if you screw up and get on the wrong train, it will not be a tragedy. You'll just have to transfer on the Metro to Duomo. When you go upstairs, the Duomo will be right in front of you.

Of course, I always think the best method is to hire a car and driver. Nothing like have a man in a black suit driving you around door to door. But if you want to go cheaper, then it is the train as described earlier.

dr,

The method suggested in the first reply is the easiest solution, but a couple of points to note.

You can buy your ticket for the Malpensa Express at the airport rail station, but DON'T forget to validate prior to boarding the train or you'll risk hefty fines.

When you arrive at Milano Cadorna, you may want to take a Taxi to your hotel (depending on where you're staying). It will be a short ride and likely not too expensive.

This is good information for anyone. Thanks for asking the question.

Can anyone tell me how long the train takes to get from the airport to the train station?

Andrea,

The Malpensa Express takes ~52 minutes from MXP to Milano Centrale and ~35 minutes to Milano Cadorna on the direct trains. There are others to Cadorna that take an hour or so, but those seem to stop at Centrale first. Check the Trenitalia website for all the details.

I went outside the airport and took the bus to Milano Centrale. So relaxing and a restful one hour fifteen minutes. About the same cost as train. I got two tickets, one to use on return, and it was discounted. Buy the ticket near the bus or from the driver.

There is not a best method. For example, nothing beats the convenience of a taxi taking you and your luggage from the door of your hotel to the door of the airport terminal. But it is a long and expensive trip over a trafficked motorway, and getting to that motorway will take time as well. - So if you are in a hurry and the taxi gets stuck in traffic, suddenly this is no more the best method: the train usually is more reliable than a taxi or a bus at peak times.

My personal preference is a taxi to a station (and often Cadorna is more convenient than Centrale as, in spite of their names, Cadorna is more centrally located) and then the train. From some locations the metro would be faster and cheaper than a taxi, but I hate traveling in a crowded metro with a lot of luggage.
