Best Map

I am looking for a detailed road/railway map of Italy. Rick's map lacks a lot of detail (e.g. small villages). Recommendations? Thank you.

We used the Michelin Tourist and Motoring Atlas. (01465-12.1-XB).We also used Freytag & Berndt "Italy South". Both of these served us well.

You can't beat Michelin maps. #735 includes the entire country and the scale is 1:1,000,000.

Regional maps #s 561-564 have a scale of 1:400,000.

The spiralbound Michelin Italy Tourist and Motoring Atlas has a scale of 1:300,000.

You can buy any of them here.

If you decide that you need detailed maps of the big cities such as Rome, Venice, Florence I recommend a series called "Streetwise". Fold up nicely and are laminated.

Actually, in the past I have used the city street maps provided by TIs in each city/town. They have worked quite well.

However, when we travel our itinerary can change from day to day. So a nice detailed map of a country is helpful in deciding which train we need to catch.

Before you buy a map, visit Borders or another large book store nearby and scan the map counter.

You will find what you are looking for. That way you dont have to buy one without making sure it meets your needs.
