Best lunch place in Rome?

Could someone please recommend a lunch place to us? We are doing the early morning Sistine chapel tour and after that we would like to get lunch. It could be further out if its void of tourists I am willing to take a taxi or bus. Thanks

A place we like over by the Vatican is Osteria delle Commari. They speak English, prices are moderate. I believe they open at 12:30. It is far enough away to not be overrun by tourists,

Another that is close and a little different is Romeo. It's not a trattoria in the traditional sense, but a lot of Romans eat here especially at lunch.

If you want to take a cab ride -- about Euro 20.00 from the Vatican -- our favorite in all of Roma is La Fraschetta del Pesce out near Tiburtina Station. (It's hard to go on a bus so just pop for the cab.) The food is incredibly fairly priced and fresh. Il Commandante, the owner is a hoot. No English spoken (well not much) and an EXPERIENCE. Also, no children under 5 allowed, reservations essential. Lunch daily 13:00-14:30 except Monday, dinner every night 20:00-23:30 except Sunday and Monday.

Near the Borghese there is a restaurant called "Lary's." The address is via Basento, 50, 00298. My daughter and I were on a tour and our hotel was in the northern part of the city. There were not a large selection of restaurants. After looking on trip advisor, we chose this restaurant. It was the best dinner we had while on the trip. The owner was very accommodating and patient while we used our limited knowledge of Italian to order. We started with the mozzarella and prosciutto. I seldom eat this in the states, but this was the freshest and tastiest I have ever eaten. The calamarata, fiori di salmon, fillette di scarfano and tiramisu were all delicious. They also have a tasting menu with a choice of meat or fish as well as a wine tasting. Their menu is posted on the website. Hope this helps.

This is a great idea to find out places in advance. I regret not doing this in London, and we ended up eating at a restaurant that wasn't very good.

We love Il Mozzicone on Borgo Pio. We have eaten there many times over the years. Tourists, but also locals frequent it. Very close to Vatican. Check out the pictures on TripAdvisor.

Hi Susanne, check out the book "Eating in Rome" by Elizabeth Minchilli (she also has a blog). Lovingly written descriptions of her favorite places to get authentic Roman food. I am using it as a food guide for my next trip.

Correcting myself, that should be "Eating Rome", not "Eating in Rome". I went back and looked at the cover.
