Best location of hotel in Rome

The hotel I booked for Rome just canceled after weeks of a non refundable booking. It was a great price but not close to Rome or the airport. Now that the prices are all high anyway I want to book by location. We arrive by train from Salerno and are flying out of FCO. I noticed that Rome Termini has a fast train to the airport and is where we are arriving in Rome. Has anyone stayed in this area. Some reviews mentioned that it was a sketchy area but convenient. I was wondering if there is a better area that is close to a metro to the train or a train station that isn't Termini? Thanks for your help, Janie

Might I ask why you booked a "great hotel" not near either Rome or the Rome FCO airport? A hotel that canceled and kept your deposit?
And what was the name of this property cancelled when you had given hem a non-refundable deposit. Was this a hotel? That might help someone else.

The Termini area varies from street to street. There are nicer places to stay, but it's not terrible. Just because "someone". (who???) mentioned that is could be sketchy (??). What does that mean? Immigrants visible on the streets? Crime? What exactly are you afraid of? I'm not making fun but it would help to give a lot more info so we can help you decide.

But why do you need to be near the station? Can you not just take a taxi there on your way to the airport, and then board the train? Or just get a car service or shuttle to drive you from your hotel to the airport?

Isn't it more important to be close to the sights and restaurants you eat to visit?
The Metro is not all that useful in Rome. You can walk to a lot of places and there are buses all over the place.

It is an area we stay in all the time -- Hotel Sonya, Aberdeen, Contilla. Loaded with good restaurants, super convenient for transit. We have probably have spent close to 30 days in the area around Termini. It is a busy area with lots of people coming and going because of the train station and it is a hub for buses and trams in the area. It works well for us. We generally stay in the Hotel Sonya because my wife thinks their lattes are better and it is about 3 blocks from the station.

The Leonard Express to the airport runs every 30 minutes from Termini and takes about 35 minutes. We have also used a shared shuttle arranged by the hotel and the taxi. All work well.

Thanks Frank, your reply was very helpful! I did not mention I was refunded my deposit, sorry. This room is for my son who has asked specifically to be near easy transportation and why I originally booked a room with a private bathroom further out to save him some money. The booking.com place was called double room with private bathroom that canceled for those looking for a place to stay outside the city and want to avoid being cancelled.

I've stayed at Hotel Sonya as well, on a RS tour. I also stayed at the hotel that is now called the Dharma Styles. I would return to either one.

I stayed at Aberdeen on a RS tour but found my single room dingy and not particularly clean - soap scum on the shower door I could scrape off with my finger which made me think their housekeeping was short-staffed in Fall 2022.

There are a number of hotels down the Via del Viminale across from the Opera House and that street is fine. To me where the neighborhood is "sketchy" is directly across from the Termini in the blocks to either side of where the McDonalds shows on the map.

I stayed overnight at the Beehive last year....would recommend. It is a hostel but also has private rooms with bath for very reasonable price. Only two blocks from Termini train station and was super convenient for my flight out. took the Leonardo Express to FCO next day ...easy. I'm 73 and travel alone...didn't seem all that sketchy to me but I wasn't out and about at night either. Just wanted to sleep close to station.
