Best itinerary

My husband and I will be traveling to Tuscany in mid October we fly into Rome and out of Rome we have 7 nights total not including our airport night. We want to visit montepulciano, Siena, corona, Assisi , volterra maybe hit Orvieto on the way back to Rome. Can anyone suggest the most efficient way to go? We will spend the night in each place. Maybe 2 nights in montepulciano. Using ricks guidebook for lodging and restaurants. Thanks. Denise

I would save Rome and visit Rome at the end of your trip. If it was me, I would take a train from Rome to Orvieto after landing. There are hourly trains that run there. I would rent the car in Orvieto and drive to my first destination. Not knowing what time you land you Rome, add a few hours to clear customs and get to Termini and then about another 1.5 hour to get to Orvieto (check the schedule). And come up with a estimate time and just make sure you can pickup your rental car in Orveito at that time. Do the cities you want to in Tuscany, then return to Orvieto and drop the car off. Explore Orvieto and take the train back to Rome to explore Rome.

Another option if you don't mind driving is start with the furthest city from Rome being Volterra. You can pickup a rental car in Rome and head North to Volterra then beging to trek back south towards Rome into those cities.

Since you have posted this twice, I would delete one of the threads so people don't answer you twice :)
