Best Italian beach to relax?

We are traveling to Italy next summer (late June to early July). We have our plans set but have three extra days before departing from Rome or Florence for the US. After lots of sightseeing, we would like to spend those days relaxing at a beautiful, clean beach. Any recommendations for beach and hotel? We are two couples in our forties.

We are a bit nervous about being too far from our departure airport. Should we stay three nights at the beach departing from there directly to the airport or spend two nights at the beach and the third night in the departure city by the airport.

If you depart from Florence, your flight back to the US will include a stop over in one European hub since Florence has no direct flights to North America (most likely in Paris or Frankfurt or Munich or Amsterdam or Zurich, depending on the airline you choose). In order to make that connection in any of those European hubs your departure from Florence will be sometime between 6:30am and 07:30am. Florence is a tiny but efficient airport which requires you just a few minutes for check in and security procedures, nevertheless you will need to be there at least one hour prior to departure. Since the closest beach to Florence is 100km (60 miles) away, even with a car you will need over one hour to reach the airport, plus the time necessary to return the rental. If you travel by train, it is probably impossible to make it to the airport by 5:30 because trains don’t start so early. In conclusion, if your departure city is Florence, the last night must be spent in Florence (not necessarily near the airport since the airport is very near downtown).

If your departure city is Rome, you can spend your last night near the beach, since the Rome Fiumicino airport is on the coast.
Fiumicino, Lido di Ostia, Focene, Fregene, are all viable options within a short car (or taxi) drive to the airport. None of them compare to Hawaii or the Caribbean, but they are the only ones close enough to the airport for a morning departure, and are ok for relaxation and for some good restaurants. Ostia is the more popular, but of the above I prefer Fregene (slightly more upscale too).

Thank you! I should have added that we will not have a car so it sounds like we should depart from Rome. Are the beaches worth a stay?

If you don’t have a car, then go to Ostia. The beach is ok (do a Google Image search to see what it looks like), but there are lots of restaurants, a nice promenade, and if you want to see some beautiful Roman ruins you can also visit Ostia Antica, Rome’s ancient port town.

From anywhere in Ostia a taxi can take you to the airport in 15-20 min max.
