Best hotels and locations to stay in Florence

We are planning a trip to Italy in May. Will visit lake Garda first, then Head to Florence. We’re having a difficult time determining where to stay in Florence. Some of the hotels are either super expensive or they have scary reviews that tell us not to stay there. I wanted to reach out to find out what hotels and areas we should consider for. 4 night stay in Florence. One neighborhood that has come up as a recommendation is the San Giovanni neighborhood. Thoughts or suggestions would be great.
Thanks!

Since San Giovanni covers the historic center of Florence, yes that would be an excellent place to stay. We stayed at Hotel Paris, about half way between the train station and the Duomo. It is a boutique hotel in a historic building, and we enjoyed it's quirky layout; although those seeking a super modern building and amenities may not find it their cup of tea.

For more ideas, look at booking.com, and use the filters for your desired amenities. I find their reviews dependable.

We stayed at Hotel California several years ago and were very pleased. Beautiful facility, good breakfast, and one can walk to just about everyplace of interest. Check it and see if it will meet your needs.

We have not made our trip yet, but have reserved 3 nights at Lorena Hotel. The hotel is within walking distance of the train station and most of the sights. We learned of this hotel in one of Rick's guidebooks. Cost for our stay (2 people, 3 nights) is just under 400 euros.

Have a great trip!

I stay in apartments usually, but in 2022 stayed two nights at the Hotel Adler Cavalieri.
It’s about 6 minutes walk from SMN station and was very nice.
So clean, nice breakfast and lovely staff.
I’d absolutely stay there again.

I’ve also stayed at the Old Florence Inn on Largo Alinari, but although it’s nice, I found the strong smell of their cleaning products was overwhelming.

We recently stayed at Hotel Balestri. Walking distance to all the sights and many restaurants.
