Best $$ hotel in Central Rome

Hi everyone,
My husband and I will be in Rome June 19 -21 and are looking for a great hotel in the $100-$150 per night range (or less if we can 😊). We would prefer a central area but are looking for your suggestions as we are completely overwhelmed with the variety and prices.

Thank you in advance!

Maybe you could give us a little more info as to your demographics? for example you are adventurers in your early 30's and ok with a hostel-type environment, or you are retirees and seek good A/C over something else? That will help narrow down choices

Hi! Thank you for your response.

We are both 50+ active people. Yes air con is important. My husband has a few medical issues. We expect to have to cab it here and there but look forward to walking too.

That's not all that far away and some of the more popular smaller hotels might be booked up. Have you tried booking.com? It will let you look within your price range (which I have to tell you is low for Rome) and your dates. Definitely stay in the historic center. If you don't know where that is, you need a good guidebook. The Rick Steves one for Rome is quite good.

Thank you for your advice. What would you suggest as to a reasonable privce per night?

We like the hotel Aberdeen. We last stayed there in March of 2015, and a double room, breakfast included, was €68 + the €4 city tax. We've stayed there in the summer as well, and it was air-conditioned. In fact, we kept turning the a/c off; and the housekeepers kept turning it on again!

The summer rate may well be higher; I don't remember what we paid when we were there in June.

It's not too far from Termini, and in reasonable walking distance of the major sites. It's also a block from some of the major bus lines, if you're not up for walking.

A "great" hotel in Roma may be out of your price range, but I like Hotel Fori Imperiali, between the Colosseo and Via Cavour. A single with breakfast runs less than €80, so a double should be within your price range. Helpful hint: The air conditioning is regulated by the front desk - tell them the temperature you want and by the time the elevator gets you to your room, it's cooled. Owned by a very nice family.

A budget alternative to a "great" hotel in central Rome might be a monastery or convent accommodation. Have a look here: https://www.monasterystays.com/ Although we stay in hotels, friends that we travel with find convent accommodation clean, quiet, comfortable and affordable.

Zoe, thanks for the hint about air conditioning. It never occurred to us to tell the desk we preferred not to use it. We just kept turning it off!

Jane, this is only true (about a/c) for some hotels, not all.

Absoluut5, I would characterize monastery accommodations as "basic", not "great".

Check out the Hotel Due Torri in central Rome -- great location, walking distance to Vatican City, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, & more. Good breakfast, great owner, too, very hospitable. We've stayed there twice and are going back again this summer.
