We are getting ready to book our hostel in Cinque Terre and was wondering what are the best hostels for under $40 per person. My wife and I are going and are great with staying in the dorms. Would prefer to avoid the party hostels if possible. If there are private doubles, that's great too. Any places?

Aaron, There are only two Hostels in the Cinque Terre, the Ostello 5 Terre in Manarola and the newer Corniglia Hostel. I haven't checked the prices recently, but they should be under $40 PP for Dorm Rooms. Keep in mind that Dorms may be "segregated" so you may end up in a different room than your Wife. AFAIK, neither Hostel is a "party Hostel", so that shouldn't be an issue. One point to note is that especially the Manarola Hostel has a strict lockout in mid-day. I believe the Corniglia Hostel also has a lockout, but I'm not sure how "strict" it is? There are some private rooms in other towns that operate much like a Hostel, offering low cost, no frills accommodations. Two examples of these are Hotel Souvenir in Monterosso and Mar-Mar Rooms in Riomaggiore. You could also consider inexpensive B&B's which are available in all five towns (check the Guidebook for listings). Happy travels!
