My husband and I will be visiting Rome for the first time the last week of October. Unfortunately, we will need to limit our walking since I recently had knee surgery and broke a toe shortly after. We're thinking that a hop on hop off bus would give us a good overview of the city. There seem to be quite a few and would like feedback on experiences other travelers have had.
I love HOHO busses. They give you a great overview of any city. I like to stay put for the first go around, although I must say we got off the bus at Buckingham Palace when we saw all the tourists waiting for changing of the guards. But anyway, sometimes you can buy a 2 day pass so you can use it for public transport the next day. Be aware of the hours the busses are available though, if you get off at a stop and mean to catch the last one coming thru the stop. I personally haven't done it in Rome and am doing an organized bus tour (in 8 days!) so won't do it there. Good luck with your trip.
The 110 open bus seems to have the most buses on the road at a time. You can check them out at: www.trambusopen.com Donna
While I have used HOHO buses in a number of cities,(Paris and London being notable examples) including Rome. I was less impressed with Rome. I think this is because there are a few sights (Colosseum, glimpse of the forum, distant view of the Vatican, etc) that are viewable or even accessible from the bus. All of central Rome (Spanish Steps, Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain) are well off the bus route, and from an overall sense, given the compact nature of Rome, you can do just as well on your own, walking, maybe taking a bus or the metro for the further flung destinations.
