Best "home base" from which to see rural Tuscany (wineries, villages)

Anyone have suggestion for us? So far, we plan to rent a car in Arezzo and head to an agriturismo near Montepulciano for 3 nights, and see the countryside each day. If there are better locations for this endeavor, i would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

You will be on the eastern side of Tuscany which is good. Tuscany is quite large so it is best to see one part well. Another good base would be Siena to see the Chianti villages which you can do on a return trip. We have spent a lot of time in Tuscany and move around to different bases. Three days is a very, very short time to see much of the area around Montepulciano. Try to add two more days.

I prefer to stay on a farm south of Florence around San Gimignano or Certaldo. That's just a few miles from Poggibonsi which is north of Siena. It's also an easy run west to Volterra. You can be down there in 30 minutes or less from Florence.

This area I'm talking about is just a little easier to get to than Montepulciano. If you can find a top rated agriturismo down there, go with it.

Agriturismos are great places to stay as you get the real feel of living on a working farm. Virtually every farm in the area has rooms and apartments as secondary sources of income.

We stayed north of there, just outside of Greve, so I don't have a recommendation for that region. Three nights sounds like two full days, if possible, carve out at least another day.

Also, be aware of the day of the week you want to rent and return. Rental offices are normally closed on Sundays.

We stayed a week in our agriturismo and loved it. I hope you have a great time!
