Best guidebook for Sicily

We will be traveling to Sicily in October and want to buy the best guidebook for our 2-week trip. Rick sells the Lonely Planet Sicily book, but I have read some bad reviews about it. Can anyone recommend the best one to buy? Thanks.

Why limit yourself to one guidebook? Even Rick recommends buying his competitor's books in addition to his. But, with that said, I used Frommers more than I did Lonely Planet

Another vote for Cadogan and also for using multiple books. If you can't decide, go to the bookstore or your local library and spend some time browsing through the available options to see which style suits you.

I used Lonely Planet in Sicily a couple years ago and I liked it better than the Rough Guide.

I agree with Otter. I buy and read them all and figure that even one piece of information that gets me where I want to go or saves me time/money pays for having bought the book.

I've always used Cadogan guides - they are extremely well-written, full of well-researched info - both political and historical. And all with a dash of humour! They also have the requisite traveller's essentials - restos and rooms, plus general information. They have a specific guide for Sicily; when we went a few years ago I tore out the relevant pages to lighten the weight of my day-pack. Cadogan is an English company and available on
Amazon if you can't find them in a local bookstore.

I like the Eyewitness books. There is one just for Sicily. Great color photos, lots of information. Maps on the front and back inside covers. Information is given by region, so easy to keep track of where you need to be in the book. Complete name of the book I have is: DK Eyewitness Travel Guides
Sicily Cost a few years ago was $20 at my local Borders Book store (now out of business, but I bet you can find the books on Amazon or at Barnes and Noble)

I wanted to add that I also used the DK Eyewitness guide. I use that one for planning what I want to see-I love the illustrations of famous sites-and also for remembering after my trip. I used Lonely Planet for where to stay, transportation, where to eat-practical info. Check your local library and see what they have. Give them all a test drive, so to speak and then choose the one that works best for you.

Guidebooks are like cars; everybody has an opinion on which is best. Liz "hit the nail on the head"; go to your library or book store and do some browsing. Pick the one or ones that suit your needs. We prefer the LP, and found it's advice to be closest to RS. We really like its transporation info. We found that a car was invaluable for seeing Sicily, though not absolultly neccesary, and a GPS was especially helpful. Sicily is a great place to find good 'farm stays" at Agritourisimo's. See http://en.agriturismo.com/ There are also some great B&B's. A good link to the B&B's is: http://www.bed-and-breakfast-in-italy.com/bb_sicily.cfm Have fun!
