Best Gelato in Rome

Ok, I have tried the best Gelato in Venice, Positano, and Florence (or at least the three best in each location ). This year I want to try the best in Rome. Who, what and where. I fell in love with the Stratichella (sp) in Venice and would weigh 500 lbs if they made it here in the US.

We spent about 2/3 of a day in Rome last April wandering around in a strange attempt to hit as many gelato shops as we could in that much time (or be too sick to continue) after 8 stops... our favorite was Gelateria dei Gracchi... (not too far from the Vatican) and honorable mention to Giolitti as its a gelato icon.

Also... I have had some good ones including stracciatella at Bottega Italiana on first in Seattle. If they have the burnt cream... its wonderful!

Tartufalo (sp?) in Piazza Navona ("death by chocolate"). Also, a Gelato stand right next to the Vatican B&B (near vatican museum) is excellent. Always a line, always a good sign.

I've never had bad gelato--it all tastes excellent to me! But, if I were looking for the best, I'd ask a few locals!

This appears to be a chain, but we returned to Blue Ice in Rome time after time.

San Crispino near the Trevi fountain. Without a doubt.

My first thought was the same one Jennifer recommended, the one by the Pantheon, thought it was great. We did have bad gelato in Rome (on Corso Vittorio Emanuele)...we threw ours away it was so bad.

We quite enjoyed the gelato recommended in Rick's Rome 2008 book, located in the Trastevere neighborhood, but be darned if I can remember the name.

I'll second gelato in Piazza Navona. I can't remember the name though!

If you're in the Piazza Navona area, head down the Via del Governo Vecchio (the street that exits the bottom of the piazza to the west) a couple of blocks to Frigidarium. It's on the left just before Via Sora. Tiny place - in fact you almost stand on the street and order. Your taste buds will be high fiving each other!

Yes, I agree with Liz. The best gelato is from the place in Trastevere. I cant remember the name either. Words cannot describe how amazing their cinnamon gelato is.

AHA! I love Google Books. Gelateria alla Scala is the name of the place. Piazza della Scala 51 is the address. The pistachio is excellent!

I agree with Liz and Kyle! I also tried the canela (cinnamon) on rick's suggestion. Never would've thought I would like it, but I got it along with chocolate and I can still taste it in my mouth even now it was so divine! That said, Giolotti and San Crispino are also delicious!

I will add to the chorus for Gelateria alla Scala in the Trastevere.

I have the habit of trying whatever looks odd and one visit I wound up with Pear Gelato. Made with fresh fruit, it had bits of pear and wow! the taste.
