Best Family Neighborhoods in Rome

We are a family of five (mom, dad, 3 kids ages 22, 18, and 6). We will be spending the last 3-4 nights of our Italian vacation in Rome. Current plan has us arriving from Tuscany by train. I am looking for some guidance on where to stay in Rome. We will rent an apartment, so I guess what I’m actually asking is: “Which neighborhood?”

Staying close to the sites is ideal, but we also want to be in a neighborhood that is safe and quiet at night. That said, taking buses and trains is fine, so long as it’s not the only way to see anything. Would prefer to be among locals as well.

So is there a neighborhood that checks all the boxes?

We stayed in Trastevere, as a family of 5. It was within walking distance (for us, meaning 30 minutes walk) from everywhere: Vatican, Colosseum, etc We loved walking around Trastevere at night, getting away from the crush of crowds in other areas and enjoying the smaller-town feel of this neighborhood. We rented an Airbnb

We are finishing up a 5 night stay in an apartment right around the corner from Campo di Fiori. Location is excellent and we have walked everywhere. Plenty of restaurants and gelato shops tucked down every side street. It is called Mial Luxury house thru Rentals in Rome. Its a 2BR/1 bath unit, small couch in living room may pullout, haven’t checked. Space and amenities adequate, not exactly “luxury.” Haha! It is located above a hookah bar/restaurant that had thumping music until 1am on Friday Saturday night, but last 2 nights were silent. We fly home to Chicago later this morning after spending 12 days in Italy. It was a great trip thanks to all the insights from this forum.
