Best/easiest way to get to Lucca from Florence

Hi, we will be in Florence soon and plan to take a day trip to Lucca and possibly Pistoia. We will be staying in an apartment near the duomo.

Could you tell me If it would be easier to catch a bus or train and where to find either the bus or train station? We won’t be at a hotel so I can’t ask the front desk.

Same is valid for Pistoia. Actually Pistoia is on the same railway line Florence-Lucca, about half way.
