Best driving route from Tremezzo, Lake Como to Venice in September

We have 6 of us in our group and we are considering renting a vehicle and driving to Venice rather than taking the train. We will all have heavy luggage and we are not young. Any advice on the route as I read that the motorway is not scenic and full of trucks/lorries. Is there a quieter, more scenic route that we can take?

Where are you driving from??I assume Milan?? We have researched this over and over from Milan and always end up on the Autostrada( like an Interstate highway) . True the route from Milan is not scenic, has trucks, but it gets you there. Do you want to drive through in one day or stop somewhere scenic?
If you have a lot of heavy luggage do not take the trains. You will be reaponsible for getting the bags on and off the trains and storing them, lifting them above the seats or at end of cars on racks. Try traveling lighter, no more than a 21" or 22" suitcase if using trains. Europeans travel that way or use even smaller bags. If you do travel by train, go First Class as there is more more for bags. I have never seen any porters to help with bags.

Sorry, just read your title. I was looking in body of your question, not at the top! My suggestions though are the same as from Milan. For scenic stopovers Bergamo, Verona, Saló on Lake Garda and the towns in the Veneto such as Vicenza or Bassano de Grappa. Enjoy your trip.

Cannot help but to ask how are you getting to Tremezzo? Use that method as a way to get to Venice?

google maps shows its about 200 miles ( 340km) and around 4 hours to drive. ( autostrada)

Why the "heavy" luggage? Heavy as in compact but heavy like lead bricks or heavy as in big 26-29 inch bags?

Finding a van large enough to carry 6 and "lots" of luggage may be difficult. A 9 psgr van with the last seat devoted to baggage may work. Otherwise you likely will need 2 cars.

As for routing I did a quick look at google maps and when I filtered out "highways" and "tolls" it did give alternate routes which take 7 hours, but looked like it would be a more scenic route

Americans stand out on trains with large suitcases blocking the aisles so not only it is difficult to take large, heavy bags on trains it is also rude to other travelers. Whether I travel for two or six weeks, I take a 22" suitcase, plus a small tote or backpack. You can always have laundry done.

6 people will need 2 cars or a van (which costs like 3 cars to rent).

There are lots of routes that are scenic, for example through the Dolomites, but instead of 5 hours you will need at least a day because it would be a major detour.

There are no rental companies in Tremezzo, so you need to rent in Como or Milan.

Perhaps your group needs to hire private transportation. We have used a driver na,ed Davide Guererra, based in Como. Excellent service. www.davideguerrera.com . Otherwise you will do better renting two or three cars instead of using a van or trains due to your large luggage situation..

Thanks for all your help. We have fairly large cases because we are going on an 18 day cruise from Venice. I think mine is a 25 inch. We are in our 70's and 80's. It is sounding like we may need the private driver which is the way we are arriving from Milan. But they are expensive. I will try the service that Suki has suggested and I think the drive through the Dolomites etc sounds great but maybe we will save it for another trip when we aren't going cruising. It is helpful knowing about the 2 or 3 cars as opposed to a van. Thanks again. Jennifer
