Greetings, Our family is looking forward to discovering Rome in early June and would like to book an apartment. One site indicated accommodations are available in Trastevere. We are definitely a laid back family, NOT into any night life. What parts of Rome would be recommended to recharge batteries & sore feet in a quiet part of Rome? Having markets close by would be nice. Should I proceed with Trastevere? Thanks for your help!
Hi Gerri,
Even though Trastevere is indeed a lively nighttime destination, it is also, in my opinion, the loveliest neighborhood in Rome. Small, ancient winding streets, pretty little piazzas. Honestly, I don't ever recall it getting loud and raucous; it's not a French Quarter kind of thing. I encourage you to stay there if you possibly can. My mother and I rented a ground floor apartment, near plenty of bars and restaurants, and we had a fine time sleeping. Also, with kids, you might like it better than other neighborhoods because traffic is very limited there- the kids can hang around outside and not worry about those crazy Roman drivers! Depending on which street you're on, that is.
Happy travels!
I've only visited, not stayed, in Trastevere but it struck me as very charming as well. I think you would enjoy it.
If you want a really quiet, no night life neighborhood, look into staying near the Vatican. Not much going on there after dark.
We loved Trastevere when we stayed in an apartment there for a week last May. It's amazingly charming, feeling like a medieval village, even though it's just across the Tiber (that's what "Trastevere" means) from the main center of Rome. It's a fairly large neighborhood, so the "liveliness" depends on where you are. It can indeed get fairly active along the two main drags - Via della Lungaretta and Viale di Trastevere. Get lodging at least a couple of streets away from those and you'll be fine. The catch with Trastevere is that it's not particularly convenient to the Metro. For that, you might want to stay near the Vatican, the Colisseum or the Termini.
But Diane is right that it's not a "French quarter" kind of rowdiness. If you do see a rowdy drunken group, they're probably either Germans or Americans. :-)
