Best district in Venice for backstreet tour?

I’m trying to do different things in Venice this time. I’d like to do a backstreet tour the 2nd day we are there. We wandered around somewhat the first time, not really knowing where we were. I think it would be nice to have a guide help us explore, give us tidbits, fun facts, etc.

One guide company will customize a tour for us, as a backstreet tour is not a regular tour offered. They are in the RS book. If we let them know what areas/districts we are interested in. That’s the thing....I don’t know!!

Another tour company offers a backstreet tour in the San’t’ Angelo and San Samuele areas. We will be staying at a hotel near by, so I was hoping to get out of that area somewhere else in Venice. Maybe I don’t need to, and this is a great one. Just don’t know.

Anyway, if anyone has done an interested 2 to 3 hour private or semi-private tour please let me know what areas you toured.

We spent two weeks in the Canareggio neighborhood with many interesting places. Near Jewish Ghetto, also interesting.

I like the area of far Castello, beyond the Arsenale around St. Elena, Via Garibaldi, and San Pietro di Castello. Lots of locals actually live there, lots of history.

Thanks, they all sound wonderful! It will be hard to choose, the links definitely help. I might let them know a bit more about my family and let them tell me where they think we might enjoy most.

Buy a copy of Secret Venice by Jonglez. That gives a bunch of quirky things, grouped by area. A guide would get you into otherwise closed sites. The Valese iron foundry, the ice house in Cannaregio for example.

Also agree with Laurel. We were in Venice for five days this year and spent two of them in the far east.
