Best dining in Venice, Umbria, Southern Tuscany

My wife is heading to Italy, on a girls trip in a few days. we have been several times, and have our favorite places to eat, but I want her to have some different experiences and not just go to the same places. She will be staying for 3 days at a time in Rome, Assisi, Montepulciano, and Venice. We would love suggestions about great places to eat. Not necessarily fancy places, she would prefer the smaller family run places. We appreciate any help!

hey jeff
you'll get lots of different answers here so my three cents is went to carlo menta in the trastevere area of rome, across the river and had a great meal. pizza pasta and dessert was tartufo, yummy. then walked back to piazza navona to our hotel. fun evening. something else for them to check out eatingitalyfoodtours.com, go the the centrale mercato near termini train station with everything under the sun. in venice we did a cicchetti crawl with alessandro (schezzini.it). a pub crawl with wine and appetizers learning about venice and it's history. by the way, just got back from nicholasville ky to spend some time with family, absolutely love it, its gorgeous and that horse country can't be beat.

I really enjoyed the food and experience at Carlo Menta in Trastevere. Just plain good and fun - but very crowded (why would you eat where no one else eats?). I like Osteria Ponte Sisto too (right as you cross the Ponte Sisto into Trastevere). Trattoria Der Pallardo is an experience - you eat what she cooks. Not bad food by any means, but the place is more about the fun. Next to Chiesa Sant' Andrea, near Campo dei Fiore.

In Venice I've become a regular at Caffe Art Blu on Campo San Stefano (near the Accademia bridge). Again, lots of locals. And for Venice it's very reasonable. Osteria Nono Risorto is crowded and reservations will help. My other 'go to' in Venice

Assisi? I'm in Assisi for 2 weeks every year at a music festival. Wonderful Umbrian dishes! La Lanterna, Hotel Sole, La Fontanella. La Fontanella works best if you go the day before, tell her how many people, what you want to spend each (40 euro with wine is a feast!) and say "felice mi fai" - Franca will serve you freshly prepared food in a delightful, simple, garden setting with killer views. That's our favorite Sunday lunch hangout for the past 15 years Hotel Sole is where our musicians and singers stay during the festival. The restaurant really is one of the best in Assisi. All my suggestions are near the Piazza Comune.
