Best days of the week to see Rome?

We are planning on spending 4 nights in Rome. ( June 2012) I was wondering if there are better days of the week to aim for? Would the city be less crowded on the weekend? ( less locals at work in city) Major sites more crowded on the weekend? I have heard the best days of the week to see the Vatican are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Trying to work out the last details.

It is June - nearly Peak tourist season. Just a question of very crowded to super crowded AND HOT. Monday may be the worse day since many tourist sites are closed on Monday therefor forcing the tourist to the sites that are open. Haven't that about the Vatican but it could be true -- not sure why it would be true.

Hi Cheri. Not sure it matters. The Vatican Museums are closed Sunday, and many other museums are closed Monday. Vatican Museums are supposedly busier on Monday because of the Sunday closure. Wednesday may be a problem at St. Peter's Basilica because of possible Papal audience. However you can find plenty to do no matter what days you are in Rome. If Sunday, do the Borghese if that interests you; Ancient Rome sites are open every day; You can just walk your socks off and see a lot: churches, street art, etc. It depends on what are your priorities. Here's what I do: - Make a list of your priority sights and experiences from St. Peter's and the Vatican Museums to the Borghese, Ancient Roman sites, etc. Look at Rick Steves' recommended self-guided walks. Do they include sights of interest to you? (The Pilgrim's Rome tour is nice and a little off the beaten track.)
- Next make a chart of the days and times the various sites are open. Rick Steves' Rome guide has an excellent chart detailing opening and closing times which is good for planning purposes. (Remain fluid, though, as things can change when you are there on-the-ground!) - Start juggling. "If I do the Vatican Museums on Tuesday, I can do Ancient Rome on Monday and Pilgrims' Rome on Sunday, with the Dolce Vita Stroll on Monday night," and so on. If you like walking tours, contact http://www.walksofitaly.com/ or look for the book "24 Great Walks in Rome" for more self-guided walking opportunities.
