Best day trip to Etna?

I will be in Catania for a few days and would like a tour for two people on Mount Etna to see the interesting aspects of the volcano. I don't have a car and my apartment is in Catania. Can anyone recommend the best way to go about this?

I could hire a car but it might be best if I don't as my apartment is in the centre of Catania.

Thanks.

If you only want the car for the day, you could take the Alibus to the airport and rent it there, returning it the same day.

I have not taken an organized tour of Etna, so can't recommend anything.

A quick google will give you a list of day tour operators to Mt Etna from Catania, Taormina, etc. We did one from Taormina and it suited us perfectly.

We also did a day trip from Taormina They are all about the same but no one told us to prepare for cold.....We were in warm 85 degrees shorts and tees in Taormina but when we arrived in Etna it was very windy and cold. We obviously missed the message. Lol

FYI--there's a winter coat rental at the chalet when you get out of the cable car, but don't wear shorts and sandals. After that you can walk up or take the SUV bus to the next level.

We had a car and have no information about guided tour. Everyone goes up the same way - pay to haul to the top or hike for free. The cost per person to go to mid point is 25 € (gondola), addition 30 € to go up by 4 wheeler and 9 € for a guide (mandatory) to the crater. If you want to go further, you have to hike.
If you have a guide you would be paying for all these fees plus his/her hourly rate. I know that was not your question. We were quite shock how expensive it is for what you get. We were also disappointed by the trash around the station. If you are going to spend that much money going, make sure the weather is decent. If it is cloudy you can't see the views below. Bring layers.

I took the train around Mt. Etna. Seeing it from afar was sufficient for me.
