Best day trip from Rome

I have an extra day in my itinerary. Either I spend a day in Florence or take a day trip from Rome. I like Florence better because of all the museums but I guess that by that time (since Italy is more towards the end of my trip -of about 50 days-), I'll have already seen a lot of art and maybe I'll prefer a relaxing day to see something new. Anything suggestions? My itinerary for Italy is 2 days in Venice, 1 day in Verona, 2 days in Milan, 1 day in Cinque Terre and 5 days in Rome/Vatican.

Vanessa,
You might consider spending your extra day in the Cinque Terre--it's relaxing and you can hike the trails between the towns. Or, Orvieto is a good day trip from Rome.

Unless you have family or friends there , do yourselves a big favor and skip Milan or spend the few hours to see the few sights available there. Italy is such a wonderful place. As to places to see from Rome, we agree that Ostia is very relaxing and it has the virtue of being easily reached by metro. Even better is the Via Appia (Appian Way)- a terrific place for strolling and picnics and enjoying rustic atmosphere.

I agree with the suggestion to add that day to Cinque Terre. You'll enjoy being able to really unwind there, since you'll be at the end of your trip. Also, I would make it 3 days in Venice with a day trip to Verona. (I hate the idea of spending only one night anywhere.)

Michael-

I was actually planning on spending that day in Verona and taking the train straight away to Milano.

And I think I'll add a day to Cinque Terre. And IF I end up having nothing left to do or something, I hop on the train and spend the day in Florence..
