Goodness, no need to shout. 😉

How about Orvieto or the excavation at Ostia Antica?

Editing to add: looks like there's a jazz fest in Orvieto Dec. 28th - Jan 1 with some free outdoor events!

hey annette
LOL "about shouting" to me it's like fat fingers small keys and voila oops.
look at oldfrascati.com (about and their blog) a 30 minute train ride to frascati, wine country and small villages. friends did this tour and absolutely loved it, also stopping at ceralli.it where nonna still bakes at age 90 and the "best" porchetta, walking the small village.
withlocals.com has a "beautiful countryside day trip: castelli romani" read about what's included, his love for the area and the reviews.
saw a special: italy magazine "wild berry at lake nemi" the village is known for wild strawberries and their annual festival "fragoline de bosco" and goddess of hunting, diana. i have bookmarked it for my next trip to rome. hope this gives you another option.

Orvieto and Ostia are both wonderful. I’ll also throw Tivoli into the mix.

Um, worth mentioning again is that the OP will be traveling in winter. Pretty sure there are no berry festivals in December/January?

I spent an afternoon at Ostia last month, could have spent longer. It's quite easy to reach by local train, with about a quarter mile walk to the site and then as much walking in the ruins as you can handle. The small museum disappointed me, but the ruins themselves were very interesting and evocative. A lot easier to reach than Pompeii.

Nemi is lovely but not a winter destination unless you have a spectacular day of sun and mild temps. Strawberries are in April and May. A car is necessary, by the way. Perhaps Castel Gandolfo would suit you and I think the idea of Frascati is excellent. No car for the last two.
