We will have 5 nights in Rome but I want to do a day trip to Orvieto. Arrive Rome on a Thursday, May 6th (no particular plans that day due to jet lag). Ron in Rome booked for Friday. Hooray! We will also book a tour for the Vatican either on Saturday or Monday based on the best day for Orvieto. Any opinions/suggestions? Ron in Rome advises the busiest day for the Vatican is Mondays.
Only thing to add about Saturday off the top of my head is the street market in Orvieto runs on Saturdays.
I think it depends as Steve says on what you want to do in Rome, and also whether or not you will want to hit Orvieto closer to the beginning or the end of your visit. My preference would be to stay in Rome for several days and soak up the atmosphere before going somewhere else for the day.
To add to what Frank stated, Ron in Rome is an ex-pat American living in Rome. He's put up a great website with tips on traveling in both Rome and Italy.
He's also a private tour guide if you're interested in hiring him.

RoninRome.com I believe he is an Am ex-pat who wife is either working or studying in Rome. Has a terrific web site for detailed, and I mean detailed !!!!, information on some specific aspects of Rome.
Also, Ron in Rome has a great link on his website to Orvieto and how to get around there & what to see. Chiao!
