I need to get from Assisi to Palermo on the same day. Is my best choice to take a train from Assisi to Rome and fly to Palermo>
Rome is one choice, you should also look at flying from Perugia (right next door to Assisi) or Florence.
Another option that may not be as ideal for a direct flight is to take the train north to Florence and fly from there.
I know there’s a direct flight from Rome to Palermo.
If at all possible, stay one less day in Assisi and stay overnight in Rome. There’s several pieces that need to work smoothly to be there on the same day…if it’s critical.
Oh. I see now that Robert mentioned Florence. Yes, Perugia is very close, if there’s any flight connections for Perugia, you wouldn’t be dependent on the possibility of a train strike.
RyanAir flies from Perugia (PEG) to Palermo (PMO) once or twice a day depending on day. Probably not every day of the week and maybe not at all in winter but you can check if it works for your dates on the RyanAir website. That would be the fastest solution, and the PEG airport is actually next to Assisi.
The other alternatives are Florence (FLR) airport (Volotea Airlines flies to PMO I think daily). Florence is 2 hours away by train from Perigia, then you need the light rail to the airport (15-20 min) or Rome, with ITA and Ryanair. You can reach Rome Airport in about 3h40m by train.
