Best city/town to stopover between Milan and Florence

Hi all. I'm planning to take the fast train from Milan to Florence. I won't be staying long in Florence so I'm thinking about stopping over in a nice town or city midway and spend a couple of hours there. I wouldn't mind leaving Milan very early and arriving in Florence late afternoon/evening so I could have more time. Do you have any suggestions on where to stop that would be worth spending a day at? Thanks.

It's just a 2 hour train ride between Milan and Florence. Bologna is the city in between. It's a little difficult to make any stops on such a short ride, so you might want to go on into Florence--a very important travel city.

Thanks David. I've already spent a fair amount of (wonderful) time in Florence before that's why I won't be staying long but instead, explore other places in Tuscany from there like Siena or Lucca. I guess instead of stopping over, I'll just add another town to visit like San Gimignano (coming from Florence). Also, I forgot to mention this will be in early December.

Parma is a wonderful and historic little city with an elegant but low key feel, and the train station is convenient to the city center. The Duomo and Baptistery are among the most important in Europe with mind-blowing Antelami sculpture from 1200 AD, and there are other attractions such as the Teatro Regia. Needless to say you should plan to have lunch there.

Another option would be to travel to Genoa. You must however take note that there are two types of train, one fast train which takes 1h1/2 from Milan to Genoa and another that takes 2hours.
Price also differ from 21,50 for the fast train to 13,45 euros for the slower train.
The fast train stops in Pavia ( very interesting city) and Boghera.
The slower train also stops in Tortona which is also interesting but not as much as Pavia.
From Genoa to Florence,
You could stop in Rapallo, Viareggio and Pisa ( where you would eventually have to change train to Florence)
With the slower trains, you could also stop at Monterosso, Camaiore, Carrara, Forte dei Marmi.
From Pisa you can also take a direct train to Lucca

Though not as convenient as Bologna, I agree with Mike. I’ve been to Parma twice and would not hesitate the chance to visit again. Visiting the Teatro Farnese, archaeological museum and national gallery in the Palazzo della Pilotta is enjoyable and could easily take up half a day.
