Plan on renting a car at Geneva airport for 3 days then driving to Cinque Terre and dropping it off in Lucerne. Have seen autoeurope .com and debating on which rental car to get. Any suggestions
Thanks for the quick response. But picking up and dropping off in same country- Switzerland. Just wondering who has had experience with the cheap rentals offered by autoeurope.com Which is the best cheap vehicle to rent?
Tracey, I've had great luck with many of the larger rental companies, including Autoeurope. I think the best car to rent is the smallest car/with clutch that runs on diesel you can comfortably spend time in.
Don't forget to think about luggage space. Tiny cars have tiny trunks. 2 years ago we rented a Renault Megane. There were 4 of us, with 2 large duffle bags. It worked well. We have also rented Ford Mondeo and Peugeot 306. If there are only 2 of you, I'd rent the smallest thing you can get. Remember gas runs about $9 a gallon in Europe.
In the last year on this Helpline, no one has recommended driving a rental car to the Cinque Terre. A few have accidentally done it, not knowing any better, I am one of these, I made that mistake once, on my first trip to Italy. So I'm not claiming superior knowledge here, just trying to pass on a lesson that I learned the hard way. Taking the train is so much easier and cheaper than a rental car (unless you have a large group).Overnight parking in the CT is a large headache, year round but especially in the summer. And the 5 towns are not linked by road so the car just sits there in the parking lot your entire stay. However, if for some reason that is not apparent in your post, you decide to drive a rental car to the CT, bigger is not better--get the smallest and narrowest car that will hold your # of passengers and luggage.
