My daughter is studying in Rome for a semester. What's the best cell phone card/sim card for her? She's taking an unlocked GSM phone with her. And will these sim card allow text messages in Italy?
I'm not the most technologically astute person on this board, but I bought a TIM phone in Italy, plus minutes, and the contract was for 13 months. Cost of the phone was less than 30 euro and it had text options (cheapest way to stay in touch, I'm told). Just a thought, since she'll be there for a significant amount of time.
Kathy, One point to verify - I'm assuming the phone is a quad-band model? Be sure to check the Charger to ensure that it's designed for "world operation" and of course pack along a couple of Plug Adapters. Most (if not all) basic phone plans in Italy include text messaging. Most carriers have a variety of PAYG plans, so your daughter can choose the one that provides lowest cost for texts. If you also have a Cell phone, contacting your daughter via text is about the cheapest and easiest way (no worries about the time difference, and received texts are usually free). Cheers!
Kathy, if you don't mind paging through a few message threads, this link iPhones in Italy has two messages from me that contain links to a bunch of message threads about cell phone usage in Italy. Many of them discuss local providers of cell service.
