Best base options for exploring Sorrento/ Amalfi

We are flying in and out of Naples from US in September. We will have 7nts 6 days. Day1 is traveling as we arrive Naples at 5:20p. How should we break up our time? The places of interest are Pompeii, Capri, Vesuvius, Sorrento, Postitano, Amalfi, Ravelo. Our return flight from Naples to US is early morning so we we need to stay in Naples night before our flight.

You could travel right to your AC town of choice-Amalfi recommended for transport options- to Salerno then ferry if still running or book a driver to Amalfi
3 nights there-visit Positano, Ravello
Then to Sorrento 3 nights-visit Pompeii, Capri
Last night in Naples

Or if transportation is an issue that late in day-reverse and go to Sorrento first then Amalfi then Naples

I've always found Sorrento to be a great place to navigate all the places of interest you mention. Getting around can be by bus, ferry or train. Certainly no need for a car. What I like, among other things, about Sorrento is the evening hours. After a day of sightseeing, being close to your hotel can be most welcome. Dinner (great restaurants in Sorrento), leisurely walk around town and along the cliffs, the amazing view of the Bay of Naples that becomes a diamond necklace as the lights come on in the distance. And yes, I would suggest spending the last night in Naples - don't count on trains, busses or car services to get you there in time. Although, I bet you wouldn't mind if you missed the plane. I wonder if your travel insurance would help you out?

I agree that Sorrento would be a great place to use as a base for the places you’ve suggested. As he mentioned it can be a nice way to wind down the day and it has great restaurants, limoncello and gelato. I’ve been to all of the places you’ve mentioned, except Ravelo, and you will have a nice time. If you are set on staying on the Amalfi coast, Praiano can be a nice option. From there you can see postcard pictures of Positano. If you hike, consider the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei).

Take the Curreri Viaggi bus to Sorrento. €10, 1H15m. There are busses at 18:00 & 18:30 one of which should be plenty of time to get to the bus area.

3 nites Sorrento visit Pompeii.

Ferry Sorrento to Amalfi, 3 nites. Visit Positano and Ravello. Save Capri for day 3, while ferry takes a bit longer from Amalfi,
It puts you in position for ferry to Naples for your last night

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. If we were to do Naples from Sorrento for 1st 3 nights then move to AC for another 3 nights which town would be the best option to get to Naples for our return flight home.

Sorrento to Naples probably easiest-just 1 mode of transpo-train or ferry

Amalfi to Naples via ferry to Salerno, then train to Naples is pretty easy as well
The Salerno train station is a quick walk from ferry port

You still need to stay in Naples night before departure no matter which you choose
