Best areas to stay in Rome???

Which area in Rome are people's favorite and why? There have been some good suggestions made, but I'd like to learn more about what people think of the staying in the different areas/districts?

I like to stay in the historic district because you are in the middle of everything.

Bob: I have visited Rome many times. My favorite area is the top of the Via Veneto. There is a metro station named Via Veneto. At the top of the Via Veneto is the ancient wall that prtecteded the city. On one side you go down to the Via Veneto. Great cafes for people watching. Good Cafes. Some great restaurants. On the other side of the wall is the Villa Borghese (park). From this area it is a 15 min walk to the Spanish Steps. At the bottom of the steps is the Via Condoti. This is one of the finest high-dollar shopping streets. Great for the view. Lots of cafes on the side streets.

Hotels NH has a nice hotel at the top of the Via Veneto and it is reasonably priced. There are numerous hotels of all prices in the area.

Or you can check the various travel sites and compare room rates and read the traveler comments. The traveler comments often give good insight.

The train station is also a short walk of 10 mins. Hope this helps you out. John

I have stayed near the Termini through Rick's Beehive suggestion, it made getting anywhere easy for my firt trip. The neighborhood seemed safe enough, there were many good restaurants, and the apartment we rented through the Beehive was very comfortable. It was nice to be near the termini as Rome was our first stop, and from there we traveled north My second trip, we stayed near the Pantheon, again using the Beehive (Cross-Pollinate). It was nice to be in the centro Storico and close to everything via our feet.Rome was our final desination for that trip. This time, we are staying in Trastevere, and I used slowtrav.com to rent a private apartment. Again, we will be with in walking distance of all the sites we want to see, and we are staying in Rome the entire time except for two daytrips. Buona Fortuna!

I stayed near Largo Argentina and liked the area. Thought I was well-located to access all the sites. Buses and taxis nearby but I pretty much walked everywhere.
I think the Campo F'iori and Piazza Navonna areas are also good choices.
If I return to Rome though, I will definitely look for a place in Trestevere. That was my favorite neighborhood. Might not be best bet for a first trip or a very short trip just b/c it's a bit out of way and not as well-located (central) as other areas. Still easy enough to get around though but still...might not be best bet for a really short stay

As I frequently post -- best is relative. We prefer the Termini area for convenience to transportation and not having to deal with a Roman cab driver.

Frank is right! It really depends on you and what works best for you! On different trips to Rome we've stayed near the Vatican (Casa per Feri Santa Maria alle Fornaci dei Padri Trinitari) and near the Termini Train Station (Hotel Montreal) and either one of those is perfectly fine--I'd stay in either area again.

Our favorite area though is Campo de' Fiori (Hotel Smeraldo) in the old center. I like it because many of the major sites are within walking distance and I enjoy walking through the market each day. The disadvantage is that it can be more expensive and sometimes more noisy.
