I am planning a 3 week trip to Southern Italy to include Campania and Puglia. We will land in Naples and we'd like to spend 3 nights in the vacinity to visit Pompei, Herculaneum, and ascend Mt. Vesuvius. It is not particularly important for us to reside in Naples proper.
Has anyone stayed in the area close to Pompei? And, if so, where do you recommend? Thank you
In April 2022, we actually stayed in Pompei and loved it. We stayed at the Hotel Forum Pompei, which is across the street from the Anfiteatro entrance - you can see the amphitheater from the street. Our room had a perfect view of Mount Vesuvius. Like every other major tourist attraction in the world, the restaurants directly across from the ruins aren't highly rated - but just walk to the Duomo and turn right - more great restaurants than you will have time for. The piazza in front of the Duomo has a number of places where you can enjoy a drink and watch the locals at play.
I seriously don't get the negativity about staying in Pompei as opposed to commuting from elsewhere.
Since we [I] are obsessed with the Roman Empire, we spent an entire day in Pompeii - from the Amphitheater to Villa of the Mysteries; half a day in Herculaneum, and another half day for Oplontis and Stabiae. We hired private guides through Askos, who were all outstanding.
In 2017 we stayed at Hotel Vittoria in Pompei and thought it was lovely. It was a bit down at the heels then, but I just looked it up, and it seems to have been refurbished. The breakfast was excellent. The restaurant was good, not great. But it is super close to the Scavi Entrance. Our room had a large terrace that looked directly onto the ruins.
Thank you for your responses!
