Best area for first time Rome visit

We (husband plus 17 and 20 year old sons) will be spending four nights in Rome at the end of a 2-week trip to Italy. This is our first visit to Rome (not Italy) and we want to be very centrally located to hit all the usual spots. I have been looking at apartments in the Campo dei Fiori, Pantheon, Spanish Steps areas but have yet to find one that meets all my criteria (really have my heart set on a panoramic terrace but they all seem to be booked at this point). Many properties are in Trastevere, which sounds appealing but I'm afraid it might be a bit out of the way. Also would like an area/neighborhood where my boys can go out at night safely on their own to get away from their parents! Suggestions welcome.

Blaze,

I normally prefer to stay in the Termini station area, as it's so very convenient for transportation. I like the area and there are some nice hotels there. I usually travel solo, so have never looked at apartments.

The Trastevere area is a bit "off the beaten path", but it would be a good choice as your boys would be able to wander a bit on their own. The area around Piazza Trilussa seems to be a popular location in the evenings, with younger people sitting around visiting and enjoying some "liquid refreshment". THIS is a similar "social gathering" in Campo di Fiori.

There's a lot of hard surface walking in Rome. Trastevere has more than its share of sharp and gappy cobblestones that can sap your stamina and have you wanting to soak your feet instead of getting back out for that last, late walk along the Via del Corso.

If you do end up across the river due to having more affordable choices, 'front-end load' each day with cab rides. That way you'll still have feet that are ready for an hour or two of power walking when the cabs are twice the price after dark.

If it's available, stay here. Totally great apartment, right around the corner from Campo dei Fiori. We walked everywhere - Vatican, Colosseum, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Piazza del Popolo, everywhere.

Excellent location, great apt, great owner.

Thanks for the insights. My thoughts about Trastevere were confirmed. I will check out the leads on these apartments as well. And I'm sure this won't be my last question! Thanks again.
