Instead of flying round trip Roma next year (first stay is Padova, last stay is Roma) we're looking at open jaw: fly into Milano or Venezia and out of Roma. Since Padova is on the Milano/Venezia train line, either airport would work, but we're not familiar with either airport. Padova is much closer to Venezia than to Milano but I don't know about time and convenience of getting from airports to train stations for run to Padova. If there's a train at the Milano airport, like in Roma, then it's possible that training from Milano is faster/easier than training from Venezia even though Milano is farther from Padova. Maybe it makes no difference at all. Will appreciate any input from your experience. THANKS!
Venice Marco Polo airport (VCE) is much closer. There is also a shuttle bus from the airport directly to Padova.
Milan Malpensa airport (MXP) is farther and is actually quite far to the west also from Milan itself. From there you would need to take a train from the airport to Milano Centrale station, and then change trains and go to Padova.
Milan MXP has generally the cheapest air fares to Italy, however if the price difference is not that substantial, you are better off flying directly to VCE because you will save train fare and time.
Two other small airports nearby are Treviso (RyanAir) and Brescia.
I think Nigel meant Treviso (TSF) and Verona (VRN), which is also not too far from Padova.
Brescia (VBS) is now for cargo flights only. So unless you package yourself in a FexEx box, you can't use it.
How big is a Fed Ex box Roberto? You got me thinking ...
Roberto: thanks loads for info about the bus from Venezia airport to Padova. "daisycan" also sent me PM details of this bus - she said when they recently took the bus it was only 7 euro. Definitely seems this is the way to go. Mille grazie!
