What is the best airline to fly from Boston to Sicily (Palermo)? ITA gets mixed reviews.
I just flew on ITA; returned last night from Bari, via Rome, to JFK.
It's not much different than Alitalia, or most of the other European airlines. Friends of mine who met us last year on Salina had flown on Turkish Air and told me that even though this means a long detour in the air, they felt the quality of that airline was good enough to warrant the extra time. I just don't know anything about airlines flying from Boston.
What exactly, did you read that is putting you off about flying with them? Have you found ANY airlines that does NOT get mixed reviews? A flight is such a personal experience....
I'll say one thing about ITA, though: Their lounge at FCO is pretty bare bones.
I'm a fan of Swiss, and you can get there with a plane change in Zurich, but pay attention to the layover times.
The best? The one with the most ideal balance of schedule and price. They all get the job done and even if you look at differences in cancelations and being late some or better, some worse but the real impact of the differences is marginal. Who is nicer in flight? I am asleep. Delta has the best movies, Lufthansa the worst if that matters.
An advantage of flying ITA is that they have multiple flights per day from Rome to Palermo. So if you book on one ticket they will be responsible for getting you there in the event of a delayed flight from Boston. I flew ITA from FCO to BOS in premium economy and it was an excellent flight.
In March, we flew Minneapolis to Boston to Rome on Delta, then ITA on separate tickets from Rome to Palermo. ITA was fine, normal. I just wish they were a Delta partner.
We first flew ITA in 2023 from MIA round-trip to FCO and again in 2024 returning from FCO to MIA. We enjoy the direct, non-stop flights ITA offers but their fares are high. We found service to be excellent but the newer A330-900neo is much nicer than the older A330. We also enjoy flying Air France for their excellent service. You probably have more choices flying from Boston but if ITA has the best schedule and fares for your trip, go for it.
