Best Airfare Seattle to Rome

Trying to find the best (cheapest) airfare from (r/t) Seattle to Rome for June-July 2017. Surely, there must be a good deal with this much advance planning?

If you are trying over a year in advance..you can't book that early....You'll have to wait about one year out, or 11 months or so.

Actually, it is a bit early, as many flights don't open up until 11 months from departure. Also, the airlines think, "Maybe the suckers (oops, customers) will pay this?" That is often the first posted price.
Right now, Condor/Lufthansa is showing as low as $1200 for early June. All the legacy carriers are in the $1800-$2000. Condor is a budget no-frills carrier with pretty tight seating that flies to Frankfurt with a connection to Rome on Lufthansa. So no screaming deals right now.

Our rule of thumb,"When you find a price you can live with, purchase them and STOP looking. It will only make you crazy.

Another thought on purchasing tickets - Tuesday seems to be the best day to purchase (cheaper), while Saturday and Sunday are the most expensive to purchase.

Also, pay attention to which day you are flying on, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are usually cheaper. Friday and Sunday are usually the most expensive.

I know everyone has their system for buying tickets, but keep checking prices for awhile before you actually buy them. When you see a cheaper price, grab it!

RB is right, once you buy, don't look back. You have to wait until 330 days before your travel is completed in order to buy tickets, so if you are going for a month, you can't book more than about ten months out.

Two years from now? No one knows. Flights and prices will not be released until a year or more. But .. . . . Since you are planning ahead, you have time to accrue miles on a plan that will get you award seats ( not totally free) if you want to pursue that game.

In 12 or 14 months check the fares from Vancouver B.C. To Rome.

In our experience the best prices tend to be about 3 mos out -- but nothing is guaranteed and predictable. You are facing monopoly pricing and airlines have chosen to cut flights and cram them full so the real bargains are scarce.

We're heading home (to Seattle) today and our travel agent found us flights fr vancouver bc to milan for HALF the price of Seattle-Milan. Agree with Norma, be sure to check this option out. But you'll have to wait til you're a lot closer to the time of your trip. We bought our tix for June in late January.

Flying from Vancouver and/or into Milan can be less expensive, but be sure to consider the total cost and extra time involved.

Friends of ours found a great price for the flight from Vancouver and booked it, but then struggled to find a good way to get there from Seattle ( there are flights but they did not want to do that for various reasons). They ended up driving up the day before and staying overnight at a place that allowed free parking for the two weeks of their trip. So it cost them an additional $200 for the hotel and, more importantly to them, an extra vacation day from work.

My sister and her husband flew into Milan to join us in Venice and it was a similar story---their arrival was late in the day so they decided to spend the night in Milan rather than continue the journey in a fatigued state. They would have stayed with us for free, but spent $250 on a Milan hotel plus the train ticket to Venice, which pretty much wiped out the savings they achieved on the flight cost.

Agree with Zandy. We flew out of Vancouver into and out of Milan (via London) on British Airways for about $800 US per person. We booked online (did not use a travel agent) in mid January for early June trip. The savings more than made up for the extra night and time (and we drove from Portland).

I also looked into the option of flying out of Vancouver but ended up rejecting it for some of the reasons Lola gave.
1. We didn't have the two extra vacation days it would have taken up.
2. We weren't about to try to drive up the same day as our flight, given that border delays are completely unpredictable and we didn't want to have to pay to park our car for two weeks.
3. We weren't about to fly and risk some delay there.
4. There wasn't a train up at the right time for us, and trains do sometimes get delayed.

We decided that once we retire, we'll be able to do something like this. Since Vancouver is such a beautiful city, we wouldn't mind spending a few days there at the beginning and end of each trip.

We flew out of Vancouver because with the 4 of us we saved close to $4,000! Our flight out was 2pm so we just left early morning with a one-way rental car that we returned at Vancouver airport. Same thing with the return flight. We landed around 11am, picked up the rental car and got some lunch before heading home. The rental car cost less than $150 each way. It was slightly more trouble than flying out of Seattle, but we did save considerable amount of money. So it depends on the flight schedule and the size of your group.
