Hello, we are traveling to Italy for the best of Tuscany tour October 24-Nov 4. We are planning to arrive in Italy (probably Milan but this can be changed) October 20 and need to be in Florence October 24 at 5 pm. We have done most of the major cities/attractions (including Cinque Terre)and want to go somewhere that we can rent an Airbnb or similar and relax for the days before the tour starts. We are thinking Verona but does anyone have any other suggestions? We can rent a car but prefer public transportation. (We did Siena for 4 days prior to South Italy tour and loved it! ). Thanks Brenda.
Whether or not this would be “best” for you, for our Italy trip this past late September/all of October, we started it off with a week in Bologna. From there, we moved to Tuscany, and that was a great sequence for my husband and me. There is an international airport at Bologna, which might even work for you, or fly in to Milan (or wherever) and reach Bologna by train from there.
By fast train, it’s less than 40 minutes from Bologna to Florence.
Sleep in Milan and explore there for a day and the next day take a direct train to Varenna (1h 15m) on Lake Como. After you’ve exhausted Varenna take a direct ferry to Bellagio (15-minutes).
Other good day trip options by direct train are Verona (1h 15m) and Vicenza (2h).
