Any great place to day trip by bus from Siena?
Yep, there are two ways that I know of. The first is by SITA express. The SITA bus terminal is a long block away from the Florence SMN train station. The buses run frequently to and from Siena.
The second way is by Grayline. The trip includes a 1-hr stop in San Gimignano and then on to Siena. At Siena, the trip includes a guided tour of Siena including the major sites. My wife and I did this day trip and it was just great. Should we have spent more time in Siena? Of course but we had a couple of places like that.
Grayline tours in Florence are offered by CAF Tours. Ticket cost was 52Euro last year when the conversion rate was 1.33. I expect that it's higher now. They are located at Via San Antonio 6R (Red). From the front of the Florence SMN train station, you are about 1,500 hundred feet from the CAF Tours ticket office. If you want better directions to the CAF tour office, message back. My directions are almost step-by-step.
Actually, we are spending three nights in Siena and taking only a day trip to Florence. I was considering making the "day" in Florence on our way from Venice to Siena. We will stop in Florence anyway, so we may as well stay for the whole day before moving on to Siena. Then, since we will have three nights in Siena (or two full days) I was thinking it would be nice to go somewhere else for a day trip. Or, we could just stay put and spend our two days in Siena. I just don't know if after a full day we may want to see something else, but just for the day. So, any ideas as to a nearby town we could visit by bus?
Ooops, I read it in reverse thinking that you were day-tripping to Siena.
Susan,
Assisi or Perugia are possilbe by Sena bus http://www.sena.it/index_e.htm
Thanks for the ideas! I've never heard of Perugia.
Up the other way is San Gimignano, Pisa and Lucca. All easy to get to.
