Bernini or Glazier

Hi., I have been on the Bernina express it was great. Traveled from Milan. We are traveling from Milan again and wondered if you can get the Glazier express somewhere along the route? And is it worth it? Some have said normal trains are just as good

Here I opened this thread expecting discussion of one of the world's best ever sculptors and artists - my favourite sculptor even beyond Michelangelo - , and about window glass, and in Italy, and we are actually talking about Swiss trains.

bummer, although talking about Swiss trains is always fun

The Glacier Express runs east and west along and near the ridgeline of some Swiss Alps, from Brig to Chur.

In my opinion the local trains on the same route are just as impressive as the fancy ones.

It is a long route - all day end to end - not counting getting there from Milano, and you can access various segments from Milano. Think about a train from Milano to Brig, or via local trains to Andermatt, or Disentis, or Chur, and travel on a part that interests you. Even if you only do a short part the whole journey including from Milano will still take most of a day. When the train contains the word Express it is really a joke because those are the slowest trains in Switzerland as undoubtedly you observed on the Bernina Express.

..and here I was going to wax poetic about that master of chisel as well. "Go to Galleria Borghese and see THAT David!!!" Alack and alas, it was not to be.

Enjoy the train!!!

Got me to look too!

majkutjane, if you want more information, it's important to spell them correctly. It's the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express.

And, since the Glacier Express is in Switzerland rather than Italy, you should start a new post, with correct spellings, in the Switzerland section of this Forum.

Well Harold I did spell the Bernina express correct and since I am traveling from Italy I thought it was relevant. (Milan is in Italy) I do realize Glacier express is in Switzerland that's why I was asking where would be best to pick it up.

Maybe you spelled Bernina correctly in the text, but you wrote BerninI in the subject heading, which is why we all looked at it. If you wanted transportation advice, you'd have done better to post under that heading. And you didn't mention anything about trains in the subject.

Nigel did answer your question. To catch the Glacier Express, take the Italian train from Milan to Brig ( in Switzerland). Then go east ( toward St. Moritz) on the actual Glacier Express or a cheaper Regional train which rides the same tracks.

I might ask if you are going to continue on to some other location, or just going to Switzerland to take the Glacier Express, then return to Italy?

Like Nigel said, take the EC train from Milan to Brig.
The advantages of the Glacier Express are:
1) It has a restaurant car.
2) It is no changes from Brig to Chur.
3) It has panorama cars with glass tops for better viewing the mountains.
The disadvantage is it is only once per day (off season) and there is a mandatory reservation fee. You would need to take the 7:23 EC train from Milan to make the GEX, the later train does not give enough time to make the connection.
The normal trains require train changes in Andermatt and Disentis, but take about the same time. They run once per hour.
Chur to Zurich by IC train run every 30 minutes and take 1 1/4 hours. There are also slower regional trains at other times.
All in all, this should take 9 hours from Milan to Zurich going this way.
