Bernina Express - overnight stops somewhere between Lake Como and Strasbourg

I'm looking into doing the Bernina Express route from Tirano to Chur in late October. I will be coming from a stay on Lake Como (Menaggio). Trying to figure out where I would spend a night or two along that route (after leaving Menaggio). I eventually need to be in Strasbourg, France. It looks like I can take the ferry to Varenna and then catch a train to Tirano. I could stay in Tirano, but wonder if it makes more sense to catch Bernina the same day and then stay either in Chur or somewhere between Chur and Strasbourg. I would prefer to stay in a scenic small town - in the mountains or by a lake. I am very open to any recommendations regarding catching the Bernina and where to stop along the way between Menaggio and Strasbourg. I'll post this to Switzerland forum as well. Thank you.

Stay in Pontresina

And to keep your options wider you don't have to limit yourself to just the 2 Bernina Express brand trains departing at 8:06 and 14:24 to get from Tirano to Chur; there are more frequent regional trains that run on the same track as that. The only difference I've seen is that the Bernina Express train is a little more crowded.

Thank you. Taking the regional trains does seem to make more sense for my situation. And, Pontresina looks like a very nice stop. Do I need to buy regional train tickets in advance, or just the day I want to ride? It sounds like I should be able to get a window seat if they aren't too crowded.

Regional trains don't need to be bought in advance.
You see more locals taking those getting off with hiking gear on.
