We're travelling to Lake Como and then the Dolomites in early June 2026. Is the Bernina Express train from Tirano to Chur worth it, or is it packed with tourists and is it better to just ride a local train that travels the same route? My thought at the moment is to ride from Tirano to Chur, overnight in Chur and take the same route back to Tirano the next day.
The regional trains will be less crowded, less expensive due to no seat reservations required. You may have to take one or two changes to get to Chur.
If you are going through Bolzano to the Dolomites, the fast and easiest is to go to Sargans, then Innsbruck, then Bolzano in about 6 1/4 hours. There is a faster route, but with more changes and a couple of bus sections. To Landquart, then Zernez, then Mals, then Merano, then Bolzano in about 5 1/2 hours.
As Sam wrote, the Bernina Express trains are usually packed. For photographers, the regular trains on the route have windows that open which eliminates the glare and refraction problem the Bernina Express trains have, as their windows do not open.
