Hi can you help me figure out the best way to get from Bern, Switzerland to Rome, Italy in August. we are travelling with 3 children and want something with minimal connections but also cost efficient and time efficient.

Book a train it will likely go Bern to Milan (change trains) and then Milan to Rome,

You can do it in 6 1/2 hours with a single change at Milano Centrale if you depart Bern at 7:34 am or 13:34. There are more options with one or more additional changes in between those times.
I like to use BahnCard.de to explore routes and options, then go to Trenitalia to buy. If you buy soon, you might benefit from the discounted fares for advance purchase ( Smart fares for the cross-border train and Super Economy for the Milan to Rome trip).
You could also book Bern to Milan on SBB ( SBB.ch) and Milan to Rome on Italo.
