We loved Orvieto when we visited last year. We were thinking of putting Bergamo on our itinerary for next year partly because they seem somewhat similar. But then I got to wondering if Bergamo would just be a less interesting version of Orvieto. Anyone care to weigh in?
We've only spent one night in Orvieto but loved it and would like to go back. We also liked Bergamo for a couple of nights. Be sure to climb the tower, walk all the way around the perimeter, and take the stairs to the lower town.
Thanks. We have already fixed our itinerary for May of next year, and we'll be spending three nights in Bergamo. We're looking forward to it.
I would say that the two cities are very different, with different past historical, Bergamo was part of the Serenissima Republic of Venice while Orvieto was part of the Papal States, different geographical location, Bergamo is at the foot of the Alps and not a secondary element Orvieto is a city of 20,000 inhabitants while Bergamo has more than 120,000.
I'm sure you will like the city of Bergamo, especially Città Alta (Upper Town).
Ciao Michael - Like Claudio, I think you will enjoy Bergamo. It is an overlooked gem with an incredible amount of art and history. Check out the beautiful photo I sent you via PM!
