Driving from Roma to Matera and looking for a pleasant halfway overnight. Benevento is smack in the middle. Is it historic/pleasant?

This is where my great grandfather is from - and yet I haven't been there yet! We were about to spend a day there on a drive down to Puglia but decided to save it for when I can spend some more time and have done more research.
I know there is a great triumphal arch there, and I think other Roman ruins/sites -
