Belluno, northern Veneto

Does anyone have experience visiting this historic town as a tourist, and what can you tell me? Recommended?

I have a friend who is from there and goes back almost every year. I will try to get some info from him hopefully on Monday or Tuesday when I see him. I will let you know then. Do you have any specific questions, i.e lodging, restaurants, museums, transportation, etc. that I can ask him?

terrific!
i came upon Belluno looking at old travelogues of the alps and also while researching ways to pass efficiently from Alto Adige to Friuli. Would be interested in anything about the town, so yes: lodging, restaurants, and attractions accessible by travelers with no car.

Here is what I have from my friend...what you want to do is a challenge and not very easy as there is no direct service available. But it can be done...From Bressano, bus to Dobbiaco, then bus to Cortina D' Ampezzo, bus to Calalzo di Cadore, then bus or (preferably ) train to Belluno.

He said there isn't much in Belluno except walking around, but definitely visit the tourist office. Most travelers pass through Belluno to go skiing nearby. Most of the great art to see is in the churches. A recommended hotel is Albergo delle Alpi, near the train station. A great restaurant is La Trappola, where your dinner is huge and is served directly from the cooking pans they set on your table.

Hope this helps so far. If you have any more specific questions, I will ask him.

Hi Carl,
Thanks for this - it's about as I expected, and I think if we stayed at all in Belluno it might be just a night, to break up a sort of quixotic journey from the alps to Trieste (bus to Calalzo, slow train to Udine and Trieste) which appeals to me for some odd reason I can't fully explain. I will keep these rec's on hand in case we go through Belluno and have a long layover.
