We shall be in Bellagio in September 2019. We would like to do a day trip on the Bernina Express to St.Moritz returning to Bellagio either by car or bus/coach. How do we go about this ?
I feel taking a ferry and train from Bellagio and the return is tricky

Not sure if this is possible in one day.
Bellagio is at the tip of a peninsula. Lake Como is upside-down Y-shaped and Bellagio is between the two forks. To reach a rail line you would have to get a ferry to Varenna on the eastern side of the lake.
From there you can look up train times on the SBB website: https://www.sbb.ch/en
I looked up Varenna-Esino to St. Moritz for 09:00 on a random date (could you get there by ferry that early?), and found:
Varenna-Esino depart 09:24, Tirano FS arrive 10:52
Tirano depart 11:00, St. Moritz arrive 13:11
Next train is 2 hours later at 11:24. The line through Varenna only has one train every 2 hours.
If you then take the alternative bus route back:
St. Moritz, dep 14:15, bus, Chiavenna, Stazione arr 15:53
Chiavenna, Stazione dep 16:37, Colico arr 17:03
Colico dep 17:16, Varenna-Esino arr 17:36
Then you need to get the ferry back.
There is a bus St Moritz -Menaggio - Lugano, and you can get a ferry from Mennagio to Bellagio. But that bus is only once per day and leaves St Moritz at 10:25
A very long day.
