Bellagio - MXP

Hello,

I will be travelling in Italy in the upcoming weeks (May 2018), and I need to get from my hotel in Bellagio to MXP for a flight out of terminal 1 at 9 PM. I was planning on doing the following:

  1. Bellagio Ferry to Varenna Ferry 3:45 - 3:58 PM
  2. Varenna-Esino station to Milan Central station 4:37 PM - 5:40 PM
  3. Milan Centrale to MXP via Malpensa Express 6:25 -7:16 PM
  4. Flight out of MXP to Paris at 9 PM

Do you all think this is a realistic travel schedule? Should the train tickets from Varenna to Milan be bought in advance? Originally I thought that since it was a local train it could be bought at the station, but some posts I have read say that you can not actually buy the ticket at the station, and since I will short at time I do not want to run into any issues. Should tickets for the Malpensa Express be bought online, or is it easy to buy them at the station?

Thanks in advances for any answers to this question!

Even for an intra-Schengen flight arriving at MXP with less than 2 hours is outside my comfort zone.

There is also Malpensa Express from 5:55 - 6:46 PM, but that would only leave me 15 minutes to transfer at Milan Central. Is that doable?

15 minutes should be doable. What airline are you flying?

Thanks for the responses so far! I will be flying Vueling.

I think another possible option is taking the "slow" ferry from Bellagio to Como (1:30 - 3:53) which seems beautiful and then taking the train from Como Nord Lago to the airport with a transfer in Saronna (5:16 - 6:34) if I need to get to the airport earlier. I will have an hour to kill in Como with my suitcase (which would just be a carry on) but perhaps this would be a less hectic option.

Is it a weekend? There are earlier trains. M-F there are trains at 4:16 pm and 4:46 pm, and weekends at 4:16 pm. It is about a 5 minute walk (1/4 mile) from the dock to Nord Lago station.
Or take a fast boat. 3:25 pm - 4:07 pm.

There is no ticket office at the Varenna station. You can buy it online and just show the email to the conductor. I did this last week

Fifteen minutes is not enough time. I took two regional trains last week--one was Varenna to Milano--and both were late....one by 15 minutes the other by ten. (The fast trains are close to schedule.)

I think you are cutting it close. And be aware, from the ferry dock in Varenna to the train station is literally an uphill climb.

It was our experience on Tuesday that the ferries were running 20 minutes late by that time in the afternoon. I would allow more time. Lots of people bought their tickets using an app.

Thanks so much for the advice everyone. It sounds like a better option would be to slow ferry to Como and then take the train to the airport, to make sure we have enough time for transfers and get to the airport on time.

Sam, we will be traveling on a Wednesday. I had picked the 5 o’clock train because I figured one hour in Como with my suitcase versus one hour at the airport with my suitcase would still be more enjoyable. Do you think I need to get to the airport earlier that 2.5 hours before my flight? If so I can take one of the earlier trains. Thanks!
