We are going to spend two days in the Como region and I'm not sure where to stay. We have a room at the Metropole suisse in Como, but now I'm leaning towards Bellagio (Hotel Metropole Bellagio or Hotel Belvedere) or Menaggio (Grand Hotel Menaggio). Which would you choose? Also, would you recommend renting a car in Venice and driving or taking the train? Grazi!
We stayed at the GH Menaggio 2 weeks ago and found it to be very very nice. I recommend it over Bellagio if you like fewer crowds, less pretension, and a nice authentic practically-tourist-free piazza in the evenings. Still a very elegant hotel, nice bar staff, beautiful pool, great breakfast. The crowd is a bit older (40s and up), and was almost exclusively British at the time. Bellagio is much more expensive and touristy but you can still easily spend the day there and sleep across the lake in Menaggio. In Como you would be too far away from the Bellagio, Mennagio, Verena triangle.
I'd stay in Bellagio. It's such a pretty town, so much more than Como. Personal preference of course but I'd always lean to Bellagio and you can get the ferry up to Como for the day to explore.
